Cars Rarunos: Schulz 190E City, the grandfather of the Mercedes A-Class
Had to adapt to the times and to continue gaining customers. In 1982, Mercedes-Benz expanded its range with a model affordable: thus was born the Mercedes W201, or what is the same, the Mercedes 190. Kept the sedan body but its dimensions were reduced in comparison with the proportions that I used to manage the brand, reason for which soon received the nickname of Baby Benz.
This model enjoyed great popularity in the whole of Europe, attracting primarily a younger audience. Was in the market until 1993, being replaced by the Mercedes C-Class – and sold nearly 1.9 million units across the world. However, the Mercedes 190 had a version that went a step beyond in the conception of their dimensions.
That variant, which starred today the Car section Rarunos, it was not an official product of Mercedes and for this reason she was not wearing the three-pointed star on its front. It was the work of the specialist German Schulz-Tuning and its intention was to provide, for the first time, a Mercedes for the compact segment: Schulz 190E 2.6 City.
The City was also known as Schulz 190E 2.6 Compact
The founder of the company was the engineer and designer Eberhard Schulz. It may not sound like, but Schulz knew what they were doing. In 1969 he had already built his own supercar inspired by the Ford GT40 -the Erator GT-, two years after starting work at Porsche and subsequently became the creator of the brand of sports Isdera and of the company Schulz-Tuning.
When he came the 190E 2.6 City, Schulz-Tuning had already harvested a lot of experience doing transformations of the most varied on the bodies of several models of Mercedes and BMW. It was 1990 and the goal of the City was very clear: take advantage of the pull of the Volkswagen Golf and present an alternative form of Mercedes.
Schulz 190E 2.6 City is presented as a model that impacted immediately by their aesthetics. The front was that of the Mercedes 190 sedan and the rear came from the Mercedes E-Class Estate (W124). Basically we had gotten a hack the body 190 to the height of the pillar C, and he had been given the gate and the pilots family.
Schulz proposed a luxurious alternative to the popular Volkswagen Golf II
The nexus of union came at the height of the rear doors, which were suppressed. Yes, despite the lack of rear doors is maintained the windows, which is why the crystal is divided without apparent need. The access to the seats later should not be the most comfortable in the world, the front doors were the sedan and, therefore, small for a three-door.
The preparer German also made some mechanical modifications and slightly reduced the distance between the axles. Even so your rear overhang continued to be extremely short while, on the contrary, the snout was very long for a compact. Without a doubt, some proportions extravagant that had little to do with the popular Golf of the second generation, which was sold then.

Perhaps the own Schulz was aware that the car was not going to fall in love with by his design, and saved an ace under the sleeve. The 190E 2.6 City should be more powerful than the Golf GTI. The small Volkswagen had an engine 1.8 with a power output between 109 and 139 HP, depending on the version and the year. The specialist German did not hesitate to choose the larger engine, which was in the range of 190, a six-cylinder of 2,6 litres developing 160 HP.
The first hatchback three-door derivative of the Mercedes is anticipated by a decade the compact coupe Mercedes C Sportcoupé and came nothing less than 22 years before the current five-door hatchback Mercedes A-Class. All ahead of its time that failed to captivate the public. Sales were anecdotal, which is why today it is a model very exclusive and little-known.
